What is a Building Permit?
A Building Permit is a licence which grants legal permission to undertake the construction, alteration, repair or change of use of a building or structure, on private property.
Requirements for Permits.
Building Permits are typically required for the following:
- New Buildings
- Additions to existing Buildings
- Repair, Renovation and Alteration of Existing Buildings
- Prefabricated and Relocated Buildings
- Building Systems (heating, fire protection, etc.)
- Various Structures (Decks, retaining walls, towers, pools, etc.)
Permits are also required for the following:
- Installation of Plumbing, Drains and Sewers
- Demolition
- Change of Use of a Building

The Purpose of Permits.
The permit process involves the examination of the plans against the requirements of the Ontario Building Code and applicable laws, followed by the inspection at various stages of construction of the project. The plan examination and inspection by the staff of the municipal building department is undertaken to reduce the risk to the health and safety of the public and the people who use and occupy buildings.
The Use of Permits.
Permits are an essential part of Code enforcement. All of us have a major investment in our home or business, which we may wish to construct or renovate. When that home or business does not comply with the Code or other requirements, then the value of our investment could be reduced, and it is possible that ourselves, our family and
the other occupants could be at risk if there is improper construction. Obtaining a permit helps to protect that investment and reduce the risk of improper or unsafe construction.

Qu'est-ce qu'un permis de construire?
Il s'agit d'une autorisation écrite qui accorde le droit d'entreprendre la construction, la modification, les réparations ou le changement d'usage d'un bâtiment ou d'une structure sur un terrain privé.
Circonstances nécessitant un permis de construire:
Il faut se procurer un permis de construire pour entreprendre:
- Une nouvelle construction
- Un ajout à un bâtiment existant
- La réparation, rénovation et modification d'un bâtiment existant
- Un bâtiment préfabriqué ou relocalisé
- Des systèmes d'habitation (chauffage, protection anti incendie, etc.)
- Des structures diverses (terrasse, murs de soutènement, tours, piscines, etc.)
Les permis sont également exigés dans les cas suivants:
- L'installation d'un système de plomberie, de renvois et d'égouts
- La démolition d'une structure existante
- Le changement de l'usage d'un bâtiment

La raison-d'être d'un permis de construire
Le processus de mise à l'étude d'un permis de construire comporte l'examen des plans et des détails du projet soumis, pour s'assurer que ce dernier soit conforme aux codes d'habitation et aux lois applicables de l'Ontario, suivi d'une inspection du projet à divers stages de sa construction. Examen et inspection sont effectués par les contrôleurs municipaux des bâtiments afin de réduire tout risque à la santé et la sécurité du grand public, du demandeur et de toute personne qui occupera ou qui se servira du bâtiment.
L'usage des permis
Les permis sont un élément essentiel à la mise en application du code d'habitation. La maison ou l'entreprise que nous aimerions construire ou rénover représente un gros investissement de notre part. Lorsque ces bâtiments ne se conforment pas aux codes ou autres règlements d'habitation, notre investissement risque de perdre de la valeur. Il se peut même que nous, nos familles ou les autres personnes qui occupent ces locaux soient exposés au danger s'il y a mauvaise construction. L'obtention d'un permis peut aider à protéger votre investissement et réduire le risque d'une construction mal faite ou dangereuse.
