Canoeing and Kayaking
Canoeists can choose between three segments of the traditional fur trade route from Moose Factory on James Bay, to Michipcoten on Lake Superior. Each section offers challenging white water and a glimpse into the past, as you imagine Coeur de bois and Orkney men plying their way along the river with their birch bark canoes loaded down with fur and trade goods.
The Chapeau District is 23,960 square kilometers of wilderness canoeing country. It is situated on the Canadian Shield within two watersheds-the Atlantic and James Bay-and is in the heart of the Boreal Forest. The connecting waterways provide an infinite number of canoeing routes. The exciting white water, the large deep lakes, and the slow meandering rivers offer hours of undisturbed paddling for everyone from the beginner to the most experienced.
